Casa Garós: the vernacular architecture that inspires Maximale Studio
Maximale Studio presents a comprehensive renovation of a traditional Catalan rural house in the village of Garós. Drawing its inspiration from vernacular architecture, the project integrates itself harmoniously with the dense landscape of Val d’Aran.
With a focus on restoration and conservation, the architects advocated for honouring the existing house and its historical elements, rather than creating a new home without looking to the past. Traditional constructive features such as the steeply pitched gable roof, south-facing openings and the use of local materials like slate and wood were embraced and preserved.
A major aspect of the renovation was unveiling the original materiality of the house, with wood playing a central role in it. Pine wood, previously covered with paint and varnish, was restored to its natural state through sanding and sandblasting. New wood for windows, doors and wardrobes was sourced from nearby carpentries to minimise transportation and facilitate its installation.
The intervention, conceived as a non-strident frame, directs the dweller’s gaze outwards through large windows and strategically placed openings. This approach allows direct sunlight to flood the interiors, providing breathtaking views of the Pyrenees mountains and fostering a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
The homely atmosphere is complemented with a selection of Santa & Cole lighting fixtures. The Sisisí Cónica Plana, Dórica, FAD, and Básica Mínima Batería lamps enhance the artisanal quality of the space. Made from honest and warm materials such as hand-stitched cardboard, natural oak wood and ribbons, these pieces are designed to be passed down from generation to generation, promoting a friendly and enduring coexistence.
