Chillida, Alicia
Alicia Chillida (San Sebastián, 1958) is an art historian and independent curator of modern and contemporary art exhibitions, she has been based in Madrid since 1980. For eleven years she was part of the team at the MNCARS: initially at the National Exhibition Center and later as responsible for overseeing the Velázquez and the Palacios de Cristal. During her latter role, she promoted the production of site-specific projects, working directly with artists at the Parque del Retiro. She directed the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) for two years. There, she reestablished the tri-continental dialogue between Latin America, Africa, Spain, opening the museum to the city and Canarian society. As an independent curator, through her unique curatorial vision, she has produced exhibitions rich in interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogues, blurring the traditional boundaries between art, architecture, music, literature, nature, and the city.
Mr. A in the U house explores the relationship between a house and its inhabitant. He begins with the understanding of the dwelling as a space for inner life.
As a result of four years of work (2021-2024), the book alternates text and photography to sketch a portrait of Mr. A’s habits, as he builds whilst he inhabits.
Aphorisms and interconnected thoughts appeal to the image, drawing a veiled intimacy from one meter and twenty centimeters distance, a measure that Mr. A set as the scale of his vision and the canon that defines his relationship with the object.
In Barcelona, on a vantage point overlooking the Mediterranean, stands the U house, sober and serene.
