Maija expresses the experience of light found in Baltic cities, where public lighting is scarce and it is the warmth of domestic light that radiates outward onto the street—from the inside out. A tower of stacked metal discs lets the glow of a gleaming honeycomb escape, full of life. Maya the Bee—MaijaMehiläinen in Finnish—was a beloved animated character during those years.
The tabletop version of Maija condenses this idea into an intimate scale. Its matte white body rises on graceful satin brass feet, softly dispersing light through the gaps without glare.
